1862<$20> AU55 NGC. This issue is surprisingly scarce, and seldom found in any grade better than XF. Even the S.S. Republic treasure, which included examples of nearly every date in the Type One double eagle series, only contained eight examples of this date. The combination of low production (only 92,133 were minted) and extensive hoarding and melting of precious metals during the Civil War resulted in the rarity of this issue. Many additional pieces found their way to Europe in exchange for needed supplies during the War years. Currency issued by either government, the United States or the Confederate States, was undesirable as the outcome of the War was not known, thus gold and silver was expected in payment.
This Choice AU example is a highly appealing representative of the issue. Although the surfaces are moderately abraded, as usually found, the strike is excellent and the color is attractive. Both sides have nearly full satin luster with rich yellow-gold coloration and highlights of pink toning. Winter and Crum offered some advice regarding this issue (in 2002): "Many collectors are still not aware of just how rare this coin is. After the widespread release of this book, they will. Buy any nice 1862 double eagles you are offered and do not be afraid to pay in excess of current published values."
From The Wyoming Collection.
