Proof 1862 quarter eagles are very rare. 35 pieces were struck, but given the dearth of auction appearances in recent decades, Taglione's estimate of 11 to 13 survivors seems accurate. The proof 1862 is unheralded, probably due to its proximity with the ultra-rare proof-only 1863, but those assembling Civil War gold proof sets soon learn of its elusive nature. This is the first proof 1862 that Heritage has offered at auction since 1998.<BR> As is the case for the 1860 and 1861 proofs, the reverse is Type Two with smaller letters and arrow heads. The 2 is partly filled, a characteristic that Breen noted, and speculated that the fill might represent a largely effaced underdigit 1. Breen is known for his eagerness to designate overdates, although a business strike 1862/1 quarter eagle is recognized by the <I>Guide Book,</B></I> and the same overdate exists within the three cent silver series.<BR> This is a marvelous proof specimen that has glowing white-gold devices and prominently mirrored fields. The strike is full save for the right-side reverse denticles, which slope ever so slightly toward the fields. Perfection is denied by two brief hairlines near star 4, one above the upper point and a second near the upper inner point toward Liberty's nose. A pinpoint planchet flake is also present, about halfway between the chin and star 2. These trivial features are noted primarily to reference this piece for those enterprising individuals who attempt the provenances for this very rare proof issue.<BR><I>Ex: Harry W.
