1862 $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. The suspension of specie payments on December 28, 1861 and the subsequent flight from Northern circulation of most coinage does not seem to have had too much of a deleterious effect on production of the 1862 Quarter Eagle. True, the original mintage of 98,543 pieces (curiously, Akers and Breen report the mintage as 112,353 pieces) is substantially less than that of the 1861 (1.2 million coins), but it is still more than that of the other three P-mint Quarter Eagles produced during the Civil War. The suspension of specie payments does, however, seem to explain this issue's poor rate of survival. It is probable that most 1862 Quarter Eagles were exported and/or melted after having been withdrawn from circulation. An important survivor, this Uncirculated representative exhibits warm copper-gold color that brightness to golden-rose hues at direct angles. There is not an excessive number of abrasions for the grade, and modest hints of brightness are seen as the coin turns into the light. A boldly struck survivor of this underrated P-mint rarity.
