Dated July 21, 1862, this Virginia Treasury Note for one dollar represents a form of emergency currency issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia during the Civil War to address liquidity shortages within the Confederate economy. This obsolete currency was from the second war issue of in 3 different dates with the July date being the most common. The obverse of the note features a central vignette depicting a seated allegorical female figure with a child, gesturing outward toward a pastoral backdrop. The denomination is printed prominently in red ink at both corners, with ornate textual embellishments indicating its promise to pay the bearer on demand at the Treasury in Richmond. A portrait of an unnamed official is rendered at left within an oval medallion, while the engraved word "ONE" is enclosed within an intricate guilloche design at lower right. Printed by Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond, this note is hand-numbered and bears manuscript signatures.
