1862/1 $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Breen-6261, FS-002. A raised vertical bar connects the knob of the digit 2 with the lower left base of this digit, left over from a die earlier dated 1861. This variety was discovered by Nebraska numismatist and coin dealer Aubrey Bebee in 1962, according to Walter Breen who gave this a separate listing in his Complete Encyclopedia. When that reference was published in 1988, he stated that about a dozen were known to him, with none in Uncirculated grades. The quantity known has expanded somewhat since that time, and now PCGS and NGC have combined to certify a total of 78 coins, including resubmissions. In the past dozen years, we have sold 42 examples in our auction. We believe that a reasonable estimate of the actual population of examples today is in the range of 30 to 40 coins, still making this an important rarity in the Liberty quarter eagle series.
The surfaces of this example are somewhat matte like, or subdued, with honey-gold color. Light wear is visible on the high points of the design, as suggested by the NGC grade. It has lightly abraded surfaces, but no singularly distracting marks. An attractive and highly desirable example of this important overdate variety.
From The Beverly Hills Collection. Lot:7605
