Letter from Union soldier George Jacobs to his mother in Walnut Hills, Ohio. Accompanied by cover. Datelined ''Camp Upton [Washington, D.C.] July 11, 1861,'' letter reads in part: ''…I have not been shot yet & hope that I will not, til I get home at least. The rest of the boys are all safe. I wish when you write again you would let me know if the money that I sent home has arrived or not. There was $20.00. We will have to wait til the 29th of this month before we are sent home & may be kept longer. At any rate, I will have to come home to be discharged or at least to Columbus. Henry Williams has been very sick but is recovering now. Our company has dwindled down til we only have about 40 members able to do duty. I am very well at present but have been bothered a great deal with the tooth ache. I had the tooth drawn & it has left an ugly hole in my jaw but it is being filled up with another tooth. Mr. Evans was here yesterday. Of course we were glad to see any one from the Hill. We surrounded him & got all the information out of him possible…He tied his horse & took dinner with us. He is still in Washington…'' Pencil letter, measuring 6.25'' x 8'', runs 2pp. Some isolated foxing, otherwise very good condition.
