1861-S $5 AU58 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint delivered two 1861-dated obverse dies to the San Francisco Mint in November 1860, followed by a third in June of the following year. Mated with leftover reverse dies, these obverses produced a mere 18,000 1861-S Half Eagles. Since this was a workhorse issue, like most S-mint gold coins from this era, it should come as no surprise that the typically offered grade among survivors is only VF or XF. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just 28 coins in all AU grades, and there is not a single Mint State survivor known (7/02). This is an attractive, orange-gold example whose surfaces retain appreciable, if modest brightness in the fields despite light rub and scattered abrasions. The ample remaining definition is suggestive of a sharp strike, and there are no singularly bothersome distractions. A tiny diagonal tick in the obverse field before Liberty's mouth is the most useful pedigree marker.Ex: April 2002 Central States Signature Sale (Heritage, 4/02), lot 7008.
