1861-S $20 MS61 PCGS. It should not be too surprising
1861-S<$20> MS61 PCGS. It should not be too surprising that the 1861-S is an overlooked issue, given the rarity and fame of its Paquet Reverse counterpart. It is actually quite scarce, especially in Uncirculated condition. There are only 22 pieces currently certified in Mint State (by NGC and PCGS), with the finest of these being a single MS63 graded by PCGS. There were 43 1861-S Normal Reverse double eagles recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan, but they were primarily lower grade examples.
While this piece lacks something in the luster department, it is, nevertheless, a bright coin that has pleasing coloration. Well struck over most of the devices, except for Liberty's hair curls and some of the obverse stars, the surfaces seem to possess a typical number of small abrasions for the grade. Population: 3 in 61, 4 finer (7/06).
From The Groth Family Collection.
