1861-S $20 AU58 NGC. After production of the Paquet reverse coins concluded, the San Francisco Mint turned its attention to the coinage of nearly 768,000 double eagles from the Longacre Type One design. This date was once considered scarce, but examples have been recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic treasures, considerably swelling the population. David Akers, writing in 1982, commented: "The majority of known specimens are well worn with F to EF being the typically available grades. In AU, the 1861-S is very scarce and in full Mint State it is rare." The S.S. Brother Jonathan treasure yielded over 40 examples, but mostly in worn condition with only one Mint State coin. The S.S. Republic was the source for nearly 100 additional coins, including 14 Mint State pieces. Even with these additional coins, the total Mint State population is still not more than 30 to 40 coins. At the next lower grade level, this AU58 example remains a desirable coin.
Both sides are sharply detailed with crisp central motifs. The surfaces have frosty yellow-gold luster with full mint brilliance. Only a trace of wear can be seen with close inspection. The surfaces are lightly abraded with a few more moderate marks on the obverse.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
