<B>1861-S $20 AU53 PCGS.</B></I> The 1861-S double eagle is a doubly popular gold issue, firstly for its association with the fabulous 1861-S Paquet Reverse pieces, and secondly for its Civil War connection. Most pieces found grade AU or less, and Mint State pieces are quite rare. As of (6/07), NGC and PCGS combined have certified only about three dozen Uncirculated coins in all grades, despite the recovery of a smattering of Mint State examples aboard the <I>S.S. Republic </B></I>and <I>S.S. Brother Jonathan. <BR></B></I> This piece offers a pleasing amount of original mint luster over the deeply mellow apricot-gold surfaces.
