1861-S $20 AU53 PCGS. The S.S. Brother Jonathan
1861-S $20 AU53 PCGS. The S.S. Brother Jonathan treasure was the first of three modern day treasures recovered from the depths of the sea, each of the three being of importance to the collector of United States double eagles and other gold coins. The Brother Jonathan sank in the summer of 1865 off the coast of northern California, near Crescent City. The largest share of coins recovered where several hundred Mint State 1865-S double eagles, some in remarkable quality. There were also single Mint State examples of the 1865-S half eagle and eagle, the latter with a blundered date. Among double eagles, the issues of the earlier 1860s were generally lightly circulated. It was actually possible to take the grade information, and estimate the amount of wear a coin received per year in circulation. This example has medium yellow-gold color with some luster remaining. Hints of orange toning are present on both sides.
From the S.S. Brother Jonathan treasure (Bowers and Merena, 5/99), lot 118.
From The Richard J.
