1861-S<$10> AU58 NGC. It is important to emphasize that production of gold coins at the San Francisco Mint during the Civil War was almost exclusively limited to double eagles, with a limited press run of smaller denomination coins. In 1861, the Western mint produced just 15,500 eagles, and nearly all entered circulation due to the demand that existed for such small denomination pieces. In two decades of coin production, PCGS and NGC have combined to certify exactly one Mint State representative of this issue. Even the S.S. Republic treasure failed to substantially increase the known population, with just two examples discovered. This example is fully lustrous with brilliant yellow-gold color and exquisite surfaces for the grade. Census: 15 in 58, 1 finer (9/06).
