1861 S$1 PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. On paper, the 1861 might seem like one of the most common proof Seated Dollars of the Civil War era. After all, the original mintage of 1,000 coins is the second highest in the No Motto series after the 1860. What a quick glance at the 2003 Guide Book will not reveal, however, is that the Mint melted 1,061 proof sets on January 13, 1862. Some proof singles may also have been included in this group, and we are fairly certain that a large percentage of the original proof 1861 Dollar delivery met its end that day. The number of surviving examples in today's hobby suggests that approximately 350 proof 1861 Seated Dollars escaped the melting pot, with the certified population at NGC and PCGS dwindling rapidly above the PR64 level. This is the finest proof 1861 Dollar to appear in one of our auctions in at least ten years. The originality is beyond questioning with warm lilac-gray obverse toning giving way to scintillating olive and orange-gold iridescence (with electric-blue undertones) toward the rims. The reverse patination is more even with a copper-gray sheen, although direct angles do reveal some champagne and powder-blue highlights, the latter confined to the peripheries. The pristine surfaces offer no help with our search for pedigree markers, but, if one were desperate for an identifying feature, they could use the tiny obverse spot on the rim above Liberty's head. A needle sharp strike rounds out this coin's list of positive attributes. Both major grading services report only four coins in PR66, with a lone PR67 PCGS specimen finer (11/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
