Breen believed that the majority of the mintage of 1,000 pieces was melted as unsold by the mint, and the low third party census figures across all proof grades support his assertion. The present piece, which traces its pedigree back to the magnificent Garrett Collection, is an exceptional and splendid premium Gem. Both sides have deeply mirrored surfaces and are richly patinated in golden-brown, lilac, and gunmetal-blue tints. Exquisitely struck, even on sometimes suspect areas such as Liberty's hair and the eagle's ankle. A significant acquisition for the specialist. Census: 5 in 66, 2 finer (1/06).
Ex: Edouard Frossard (28th Sale); Garrett Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, March 1980), lot 706.
