1861<S$1> PR66 NGC. Although Mint records indicate that 1,000 Proof Seated Dollars were coined in April of that year, it is generally believed that only about 400 survive today, partly because of natural attrition, and partly due to wholesale melting within the Mint at a later date. In reality, the actual net number of Proof Silver Dollars distributed is not precisely known. It is a fact, however, that business strikes are elusive, placing additional demand on those Proofs that have survived. Walter Breen took the time to describe three different die varieties for the Proof dollars of this year, yet today, it is not known if these descriptions actually represent different varieties or not. This Proof example has characteristics that were described by Breen for both his B-1 and B-2 varieties. This example, which traces its pedigree back to the magnificent Garrett Collection, is an exceptional and splendid Gem that will easily capture the attention of the connoisseur. Both sides have deeply mirrored surfaces with rich golden-brown color that is accented by blue, lilac, and iridescent toning. A single PR67 example has been certified by PCGS, and otherwise, this example is tied for the best certified example of the date.
