1861$1> PR63 PCGS. The scarcity of high grade business strike 1861 Seated dollars attaches special significance to well preserved proofs. In addition, the 1861 is considered the rarest proof Seated dollar of the Civil War era. Only 350 examples of the 1,000 coins originally produced are believed to have been distributed. The present example was struck from the obverse die that Bowers describes in his 1993 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. The authors' description of the reverse die is not detailed enough for us to make a positive attribution, but we do know that this coin displays remnants of an inner circle at the denticles over and before the UNIT in UNITED. Both sides are moderately toned in golden-gray shades that are somewhat deeper on the reverse in an irregular fashion. The razor sharp strike is free of criticism; the only mentionable distraction is scattered hairlines that are visible under the patina.
