1861<S$1> MS64 PCGS. As the Civil War got under way, the public in both the north and the south began hoarding precious metals. Silver dollars were not released into circulation at the time. Rather, they were actually sold by the Mint at 108 cents each, according to James Pollock in his annual Mint Report. The present lustrous and meticulously struck near-Gem has light golden-brown toning near the borders, and contact is generally limited to a few faint marks on the upper reverse field and a couple of tiny reverse rim dings at 2 and 8 o'clock. Population: 22 in 64, 5 finer (11/05).
