1861<S$1> MS64 NGC. The mintage for the 1861 Seated dollar was a generous 77,500 pieces. However, a significant number were exported overseas, and a large percentage of the mintage was also melted by private citizens during the years of the Civil War. We know that 40,000 silver dollars with this date were also melted in 1861 to provide bullion for subsidiary silver coinage. As a result, the 1861 is very scarce in all circulated grades. In fact, proofs appear at auction more often than XF or AU coins. Mint State pieces are also seldom seen. This piece is well defined throughout with even, satin-like luster that has taken on an overlay of rich, medium density gray toning with an undertone of rose that is apparent when held beneath a light. Population: 16 in 64, 4 finer (10/05).
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
