1861<S$1> MS61 PCGS. Silver dollars were not released into circulation during this time, as their bullion value exceeded their face value. Rather, they were sold by the Mint at 108 cents each, according to Mint Director James Pollock in his annual Mint Report. Substantial melting of silver dollars occurred during this time, with at least 40,000 pieces melted in 1861. This was so that they could be recoined into small denomination silver issues. The current example is sharply struck, displaying strong (though not full) definition in Liberty's hair and sandal, and on the eagle's talons. The surfaces are nearly white, revealing just a hint of incipient color. A few minute contact marks are noted on Liberty's cheek and neck and right arm and leg, and another below the eagle's beak. Some wispy hairlines also occur in the fields.
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars.
