1861 Pioneer Base Ball Club Token. It is reported that just 150 pieces of this white metal token were ever minted, done in commemoration of the third anniversary of the formation of the Pioneer Base Ball Club in Springfield, Massachusetts, the town which ironically would give birth to the game of basketball three decades later. Surely it goes without saying that baseball artifacts dating to the Civil War era are tremendously scarce and desirable, and this piece has the marvelous visuals to match its ideal collecting vintage. The face of the token features an image of a period batter, complete with pillbox cap and wagon tongue bat, with "Pioneer Base Ball Club" text navigating the perimeter. Further text on verso reveals, "Organized April 30, 1858, Play Ground on Hampden Park, Springfield, Mass." Minor surface wear causes no concerns, with the piece still displaying quite convincingly at an EX-MT level.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
