1861-O 50C MS65 NGC. The outbreak of the Civil Wa
1861-O<50C> MS65 NGC. The outbreak of the Civil War prevented the shipment of any other dies for 1861 than those that had been received in New Orleans in the later months of 1860. As a result, the six known obverse dies are among the most overworked in the entire Seated Liberty series with an average of 422,000 coins struck per die. This particular piece does not show evidence of die wear, but apparently the obverse and reverse dies were set slightly further apart than usual in order to prevent die breaks. The result, of course, is a slight loss of highpoint detail on the head of Liberty and peripheral stars on the obverse, and the eagle's left (facing) claw and fletchings of the arrow on the reverse. The fields are bright, suggesting that perhaps mint personnel polished the dies shortly before striking, and each side is covered with a lovely mixture of moss-green and rose toning. Conditionally rare with only nine pieces so graded by NGC with three finer (5/05).
