1861-O 50C --CSA Obverse, Shipwreck Effect--NGC. FS-007
1861-O 50C --CSA Obverse, Shipwreck Effect--NGC. FS-007. After one considers the loss of life when the S.S. Republic went down in 1865, the next largest loss was the massive amount of gold bullion and gold coins. However, a small amount of silver coins were also aboard. This is an especially interesting artifact as it has the "CSA Obverse" on an 1861-O half dollar. The diagnostic for this obverse according to the Fivaz-Stanton reference is: "The die crack from the denticles to the right of the sixth star down to Liberty's nose (actually to her shoulder below her jaw) is diagnostic for this rare variety." The sea was not as kind to the silver coins recovered as it was to the gold pieces. This coin shows the granular effect usually seen on salvaged coins. The surfaces are bright throughout. The striking details are well brought up in all areas and there are no mentionable abrasions or wear. Accompanied by an Odyssey Marine wooden box with the associated certificates, etc.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
