1861-O $20 XF45 NGC. With links to the Southern Confederacy, the 1861-O is an immensely popular Liberty Double Eagle. The original mintage for this date is 17,741 pieces, a total that can be subdivided as follows: 5,000 coins delivered by the United States in January 1861; 9,750 pieces delivered by the state of Louisiana from late January through May 1861; and 2,991 coins struck under authority of the Confederate States sometime on or after June 1, 1861. Examples from each of the three deliveries are indistinguishable. Writing in 2002, Doug Winter estimates that 135-165 1861-O Double Eagles are extant. The vast majority of survivors grade VF20-XF40 with the present representative being identical in grade to the coin that sold as lot 4031 in our January 2002 sale of the Eagle Collection. The coin in this auction, however, is somewhat better defined, particularly in the date area. The reverse is overall bold in appearance, but accuracy compels us to mention some indistinct detail over some of Liberty's hair curls and the star centrils on the obverse. A green-gold and orange-gold coin with remnants of a semi-prooflike finish evident at certain angles. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
