1861-O<$20> XF45 NGC. With links to the Confederacy, the 1861-O is an immensely popular Liberty double eagle. The original mintage for this date is 17,741 pieces, a total that can be subdivided as follows: 5,000 coins delivered by the United States in January 1861; 9,750 pieces delivered by the state of Louisiana from late January through May 1861; and 2,991 coins struck under authority of the Confederate States sometime on or after June 1, 1861. Examples from each of the three deliveries are indistinguishable.
Writing in 2002, Doug Winter estimates that 135-165 1861-O double eagles are extant. The vast majority of survivors grade VF20-XF40. The reverse of the present XF45 example is overall bold in appearance, but accuracy compels us to mention some indistinct detail over some of Liberty's hair curls and the lower left (facing) star centrils on the obverse. A peach-gold piece with remnants of a semi-prooflike finish evident at certain angles. Minute contact marks are scattered over each side. Population: 18 in 45, 52 finer (6/05).
