<B>1861-O $20 --Whizzed--NCS. AU Details.</B></I> The 1861-O double eagle is always an interesting coin to study, as examples were coined in this initial year of the Civil War under the Union, the seceded State of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. Coins exist with strong dates, weak dates, repaired dates, and a prominent obverse die crack, and various theories have been propounded to attribute the coins to those three periods. Unfortunately, this coin has been heavily whizzed throughout, giving the surfaces a highly unnatural, too-uniform regularity on both sides. A coin with AU details should show numerous light to moderate abrasions, but they are nearly completely lacking on this coin. The date is strong, and shows no sign of repair like some examples do, and yet the obverse die crack that many of the strong date examples show is absent.
