<B>1861-O<$20> VF25 PCGS.</B></I> With a mintage of just 17,741 pieces under three separate issuing authorities, this issue has a convoluted past too deep to fully explore here. Suffice it to say that examples in any grade are elusive and highly prized by collectors. This moderately worn piece is mustard-orange with a touch of green. The strike was uneven, as evidenced by the weakness of the stars, particularly between 10 and 11 o'clock. The bottoms of the numerals in the date are weak, a fact that may or may not be useful for dating this piece, depending on the validity of Breen's conjectures. A classic piece, inextricably linked to the events of the Civil War.
