<B>1861<H10C> PR66 NGC.</B></I> This razor sharp survivor is originally toned in sea-green and crimson-pink shades over the obverse with cobalt-blue and lime-gold tones on the reverse. One should have little difficulty appreciating the smooth, Gem quality features after even the most cursory glance. A tiny, well concealed spot near 9 o'clock on the obverse is mentioned solely for accuracy. Although federal records list a mintage of 1,000 pieces for the proof 1861 Seated Half Dime, Breen (1977) asserts that fewer than 400 coins actually sold to the collecting public by year's end. Since the balance of the mintage was melted, this early Civil War era issue is understandably rare at the finer levels of preservation. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only seven examples in PR66, and a mere two finer (3/05).
