1861 H10C PR66 NGC. This razor sharp survivor is originally toned in charcoal shades with some cobalt and copper-gold undertones. The latter are only evident at direct angles, but one should have little difficulty appreciating the smooth, Gem quality features after even the most cursory glance. A tiny, well concealed spot near 2 o'clock on the reverse rim is mentioned solely for accuracy. Although federal records list a mintage of 1,000 pieces for the proof 1861 Seated Half Dime, Breen (1977) asserts that fewer than 400 coins actually sold to the collecting public by year's end. Since the balance of the mintage was melted, this early Civil War era issue is understandably rare at the finer levels of preservation. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only five examples in PR66, and a mere two finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
