<B>1861 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The reported mintage for this date was an incredible 349 coins, yet the number of survivors suggests a much smaller mintage. There is little doubt that quite a few of these pieces were melted in 1862, after remaining unsold. Only about 25 or 30 examples of this proof issue still survive, less than 10% of the recorded mintage. Most other gold proofs of this era have a survival rate in the range of 50% or even greater. This piece is a glorious Gem with brilliant light yellow color. The fields are deeply mirrored and the devices are highly lustrous, imparting a wonderful cameo appearance.
