1861 G$1 MS67 PCGS. The mintage for the 1861 gold dollar exceeded half a million pieces, the first issue to have such a high mintage since 1857. This generous production has made the 1861 popular with type collectors, and in lower Mint State grades, examples are common. Unlike the later issues of the 1880s, however, Gems are only occasionally available, and NGC and PCGS combined have certified just four Superb Gems, two each at NGC and PCGS (9/07).
This sharply struck beauty has a breathtaking appearance. The obverse has vivid sun-gold color tempered by orange at the margins, while the reverse has vibrant butter-yellow color. Strong, though not flashy luster enhances the warm tones of the surfaces and emphasizes the near-perfect preservation of the piece. A wonderful, entrancing example of this Civil War issue.

Coin Engraver: James B.
