1861 Letter Lamenting that “Slavery” Caused the Civil War
June 2, 1861-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Lamenting that Slavery Caused the War, Fine.
Fascinating letter from Anna Churchill to her “dear Grand Daughter” Hattie Ford dated June 2, 1861 lamenting the outbreak of the Civil War. Accompanied by a postally used envelope with its 1863 issued 3¢ stamp, postmarked Jan. 28, 1857, at New Orleans, Louisiana, torn open across its bottom. Letter is written in a fine light hand and has some expected tone at the back side folds, yet still quite readable. Anna writes, in part:

“…everything seemed very prosperous till the war broke out, which seems to bring plight upon almost all our Earthly prospects it seems very shocking that our country come so near being crushed by the laws of slavery. I can not express my feelings about those things, but trust that the Lord will defend his own cause and people even his Elect who cry unto him day and night, I think many of them are among the Southern States slaves I rejoice to think we may be numbered with this praying Armey [sic] and send our supplications with all the faithful soldiers of the Cross praying in faith that the God the Armies of Love he will soon turn victory on the side of all that is right and soon set liberty all that are bound...”
