The 1861-D gold dollar is a high visibility coin whose fame is known far beyond collectors of gold dollars. According to Breen (1988), there were no gold dollars struck under Union authority, making the '61-D is a transcendent rarity. While only 50-55 pieces are known in all grades, and its absolute rarity is beyond dispute, there are a surprising number of high grade examples extant. Such a statement must, of course, be taken in context as only six other pieces have been graded in MS 63 by both major services with only one finer (8/03).<BR>As with all 1861-D gold dollars, the U in UNITED is very weak. The surfaces of this coin are quite extraordinary. The fields are bright and combine a semi-prooflike sheen with some cartwheel luster as well, similar to the finish seen on many three dollar gold pieces. This semi-prooflikeness was achieved by a mint employee who roughly polished the dies. Evidence of this can be seen on the lower part of the wreath, the bow, and ribbons, some portions of which are attenuated or detached. Both sides are very clean for a coin of this grade and a light bit of reddish patina gives the coin added character. Unquestionably, a coin for an advanced collector, and a coin that will most likely eventually be placed in one of the finer collections of Southern gold being formed. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>06/01/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$39,100.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
