(per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). In the first four months of 1861, 1,597 half eagles were struck in the Dahlonega mint by the Union. The mint was seized by Confederate forces on April 8, and a small quantity (estimated between 1,000 and 2,000 pieces) were subsequently struck under the auspices of the Confederacy. Unfortunately, there is no definitive way to determine which coins were struck under the authority of which government. However, what is known is the overall rarity of the '61-D half eagle. The number extant today is estimated between 60 and 70 coins in all grades with only 4-5 Mint State pieces believed known. This is only the second Uncirculated example we have offered at public auction over the past decade.<BR>Curiously, unlike most known 1861-D half eagles, this piece does not show any weakness at the top of the obverse or corresponding area on the reverse, and the coin appears to have been struck from perfectly aligned dies. The lustrous surfaces show rich orange-gold color, bright, semi-prooflike fields, and no abrasions or flaws that would be useful in tracing the pedigree of this important coin. One of the finest examples known of this important issue.<BR><I>Ex: Green Pond Collection 8/98 via Heritage Rare Coin Galleries / Jeff Garrett; Green Pond Collection (Superior, 3/00), lot 872, unsold; 2001 ANA Sale (Heritage, 8/01), lot 7809, unsold; FUN 2003 Sale (Bowers and Merena, 1/03), lot 674, where it brought $55,200; private collection via Gary Adkins.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1995</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$37,400.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
