1861-D $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 39-EE. A mere 1,597 half eagles were coined at the Dahlonega Mint in 1861, according to official government records. An unknown but small additional quantity were produced after the Confederate Government gained control of the facility. Typically, numismatists suggest that between 1,000 and 2,000 additional pieces were coined under Confederate authority. It is certainly safe to state that less than 4,000 were coined in total. It is probably impossible to distinguish between Federal and Confederate strikes.
This pleasing example has satiny and smooth yellow surfaces with nearly full luster remaining on each side. A few surface marks are present, limiting the grade. It is a highly desirable example that will make a nice addition to a specialized collection. Population: 7 in 53, 18 finer (2/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
