1861-D<$5> AU53 PCGS. Variety 39-EE. The 1861-D is one of the rarest half eagles from the Dahlonega Mint, struck to the extent of only 1,597 pieces under Federal control. After the Confederated States of America seized the facility, an additional 1,500 to 2,000 coins were struck, according to Garrett and Guth. The coins are indistinguishable. Any 1861-D half eagle is considered to be a great prize. The present piece offers much mint luster remaining on the delightful orange-gold surfaces. The date is placed low in the field. Unlike most examples of the issue, this coin has a decent strike, with weakness confined mainly to the fletchings and the right (facing) claw. There are no overly distracting abrasions. Population: 6 in 53, 17 finer (9/06).
