1861-D $5 --Improperly Cleaned, Rim Filed--NCS. AU Details. Variety 39-EE. Only 1,597 pieces were officially struck of the 1861-D five plus an unknown number after Confederate forces seized the mint. Examples are rare in all grades with only 65-75 pieces known in all grades. Well, but certainly not fully struck, the surfaces are bright from cleaning, as stated on the insert. We do not doubt that the rim has been filed also, but cannot see evidence of it in the holder--it may be obscured by the plastic lip that holds in the coin. Deep reddish tinged patina.
From The Twin Hollows Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
