1861-D<$5> AU50 PCGS. Variety 39-FF. The 1861-D is famous as one of the few issues struck by the Confederacy. The reported mintage of 1,597 pieces was struck prior to secession, and an unknown but small quantity was coined after Georgia left the Union. Since only one die pair was used, and no cracks or clashes developed, no guideline has been established to identify the C.S.A. pieces. This orange-gold piece is suitably struck, with noticeable weakness on present on the lower half of the eagle. Handling marks are limited to a pair of subdued pinscratches that converge near the obverse rim at 4 o'clock. Along with the 1861-D gold dollar, the 1861-D half eagle completes a short but impressive collection of C.S.A. gold coins.
