1861 Copper and Lead Die Trials by Ernest G. Chormann.
1861 Copper and Lead Die Trials by Ernest G. Chormann. A fascinating lot of die trials. We were unable to find out anything about Chormann other than he was a Philadelphia engraver and die cutter and he was listed in Boyd's Directory 1860-1, with an address of 41 North 6th Street. These are high quality trials, suggestive of Mint quality. Three are in lead, and two of those have an Indian head central motif inside a scalloped rim, the reverses are also scalloped with different finishes. The third lead piece is larger (half dollar sized) with a central motif that imitates Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, again inside scallops with punches below for digits, the reverse has a copy of the eagle seen on contemporary Seated Liberty coinage, a scallop around, and CHORMANN F. below the eagle. Four copper pieces are also included, each with 1861 in the center and the initials EGC in a triangular position around the date, scalloped outer design and in relief; the reverses have a rosette within the same scalloped relief. An interesting group of die trials that deserves more extensive investigation.
