Civil War Union Letters
Remarkable Civil War Letter with Illustration Sketch of Uncle Sam Booting a Black Man Out Labelled “Secession”
June 7, 1861-Dated Civil War Period Autograph Letter with a Hand-Drawn Original Political Artwork Illustration of “Uncle Sam” giving the boot to a Black Man who is labeled as “SECESSION,” Schenectady, New York, Choice Very Fine.
A truly remarkable content fabulously Hand-Illustrated Civil War 2 page Letter that was mailed from Schenectady, New York by James Monroe Tower Sexton to his uncle, John Fullagar. This Letter measures 8” x 9.5” and includes its original stamped and circular Postally Handstamped “JUN 7 1861” from Schenectady, on the period transmittal Envelope. The year is not fully legible, but is “1861” with a trivial short fold split and slight tone to (blank) second page. Apparently a older boy, perhaps a teenager, named James writes this 2 page letter to his uncle concerning such current Civil War events as his Cousin Willie's enlistment in the Northern Black Horse Cavalry, a false rumor that a local man was shot for desertion, a local bookstore owner's attempts to raise a company of soldiers, and other matters such as nut gathering and a tournament of fire engines.

This Letter features a wonderful, highly dramatic Hand-drawn original sketch of UNCLE SAM, for whom only his leg is visible, emerging from the doorway of a building labeled “UNITED STATES,” giving the boot to a shoeless Black Man figure labeled “SECESSION.” Excellent sharpnest and clarity to the illustration and is overall excellent for display.
