1861-C $5 MS61 NGC. Winter 30-K. Die State II. While it is impossible to positively determine which coins were struck by the Confederacy, it is popularly believed that those with a die crack at the top of AMERI are the most likely candidates. This piece shows the earlier state of that die crack. As one might imagine, in the early days of the War for Southern Independence most people in the South had other matters on their mind than setting aside a high denomination gold coin. As a result, very few 1861-C Fives have survived in Mint State. Winter estimates that only three are known today. This important coin has soft, frosted mint luster over each side with a glimmering semi-prooflike finish in the fields. Sharply struck, the only areas that show any sign of weakness are on the eagle's neck and the fletchings on the upper arrow on the reverse. Identifiable by a short angling mark above star 2 on the obverse, and an even smaller one in the reverse field between the eagle's left (facing) wing and the upper olive leaf. From the Ashland City Collection.
