1861-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 30-K. The 1861-C is famous because a portion of its mintage occurred after North Carolina seceded from the Union. Among the 6,879 pieces struck, 887 were coined after the Charlotte Mint was seized on April 20. All are from the same pair of dies, which makes identification of the Confederate pieces something of a guessing game. The present orange-gold example has mildly prooflike flash within the shield and legends, and there are no mentionable marks. Die lines between the rim and the RI in AMERICA are diagnostic of this historically fascinating issue. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. A collector's envelope is included, and is marked "1861c $5.00 ex. fine." Population: 8 in 58, 3 finer (1/07).
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
