1861-C<$5> AU58 NGC. Variety 30-K. Die State III. Confederate troops seized the Charlotte Mint on April 20, 1861, and forced Mint employees to swear fealty to the Confederacy or lose their jobs. Of this issue, the final one produced at the mint, 6,879 pieces were issued, the final 887 struck in May under the Confederacy. This coin shows the latest die state known for the dies, with a reverse die crack that extends from the first A in AMERIC rightward to over the I, and leftward to above the F in OF. Those coins from the latest die state have traditionally been assumed to be those 887 pieces struck under the Confederacy: a logical conclusion, although one for which certain proof is lacking. This specimen has good orange-gold color, with a few light, grade-consistent abrasions and a pleasing strike. This is a popular coin because of its low mintage, it last-year status, and its association with the Confederacy and the Civil War. Census: 23 in 58, 6 finer (7/06).
