1861-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 30-K. Of the 6,879 pieces believed struck, 887 coins were produced in May 1861, after the seizure of the Charlotte Mint by Confederate troops. The present example has a slender die crack from the rim across the tops of the MER in AMERICA, but is not the final die state associated with the Confederate-struck issue. It is quite unusual to have two such pieces in the same auction, but a wonderful opportunity for the collector to make a studied comparison for an advanced set of Charlotte gold. This is an attractive piece with a reasonable strike and ample glowing luster. Unpleasant marks are absent, just the small handling marks one would expect, which ensures the eye appeal of this important piece. Population: 11 in 55, 9 finer (11/07).
From The Waxhaw Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
