1861-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 30-K. Of the 6,879 pieces believed struck, 887 coins were produced in May 1861, after the seizure of the Charlotte Mint by Confederate troops. The present example has a slender die crack from the rim across the tops of the MER in AMERICA, but is not the final die state associated with the Confederate-struck issue. An attractive piece nonetheless, with a reasonable strike and ample glowing luster. Unpleasant marks are absent, which ensures the eye appeal. Population: 12 in 55, 10 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
