1861-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 30-K. A rare and historic coin, with an original mintage of only 6,879 pieces. Many experts believe that the coins, such as this piece, with a die crack through the tops of AMERI were struck by the Confederacy, a total of 887 coins struck after Confederate troops took control of the Charlotte Mint on April 20, 1861. This piece shows the crack running from above the A and lightly joining the tops of MERI. This well-struck example's only weakness is on the neck and the upper wings of the eagle, and on the left obverse stars. Numerous small abrasions pepper each side, most notably in the lower right obverse field. An important, high grade representative of this always sought-after issue. Population: 12 in 55, 11 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
