1861-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Winter 30-K. Die State II. Previously offered as lot 7602 in our October 2000 Long Beach Sale, where it was described as, "A well-documented Charlotte half eagle rarity, one of just 6,879 pieces struck just before the dawn of the Civil War. Production of C-mint gold was never resumed after the conflict ended. This is a lustrous yellow-gold example with bold striking details in virtually all areas, being only modestly deficient on the eagle's neck feathers. The PCGS insert on this piece pedigrees it to the North Georgia Collection, but none of the pedigree markers on this coin match those on the photo of the 1861-C in our North Georgia catalog.From the Judge Thomas Butt Collection, October 2000 Long Beach Sale (Heritage, 10/00), lot 7602.From the Ashland City Collection.
