1861-C $5 AU50 PCGS.<p>This is a popular, rare, and important issue with a limited original mintage of 6,879 pieces. It is believed that 887 coins of the total number produced were delivered by the Confederate States of America in May of this year. Some gold collectors believe that those 1861-C Half Eagles that display a reverse die crack through the tops of the letters AMERI in AMERICA were struck under the supervision of the Confederacy. This coin does display that die crack (and there is also a strike through in the right reverse field--evidence of sloppy workmanship), but we cannot say for certain whether this coin was struck by the United States or the Confederacy. This is an orange-gold example with ample evidence of a bold overall strike. The fields reveal modest brightness at a few angles, the number of abrasions is consistent with a C-mint Half Eagle that saw 10 points of wear. This final-year example would do justice to any advanced gold collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
