1861 Anti-Secession Strong's Dime Caricatures #2 1861 Strong's Dime Caricatures No. 2 Anti-Secession
<B>1861 Strong's Dime Caricatures No. 2 Anti-Secession</B></I> political cartoon "Little Bo-Peep and Her Foolish Sheep." Offered here is an awesome print from Strong's Dime series, published in 1861. This is actually the print that was deposited in the U.S. District Clerk's Office, Southern District of New York on February 28, 1861, in order to claim copyright protection, as documented by the clerk's stamp. It shows Little Bo-Peep (the Union), dressed in stars and stripes, watching as seven of her sheep go scampering off into a forest of palmetto trees (South Carolina) which are inhabited by wolves (European powers) saying, "If we can only get them separated from the flock, we can pick their bones at our leisure." In the foreground are several other sheep- one labeled "Virginia" and the other "Kansas." An old dog "Hickory" (strong Federalist Andrew Jackson) is laying dead in the grass while a frightened dog "Old Buck" (ineffectual James Buchanan) is running away to the left. Bo-Peep is saying "Sic 'em, Buck! Sic 'em! I wish poor old Hickory was alive. He'd bring 'em back in no time." The art is not signed but most likely done by John H. Goater. Fine condition, a creased upper-left corner has some pinholes not affecting the print, mounted on a larger board, 11.25" x 19" overall.
