(1861-65) John C. Breckinridge, Fuld-508/510a, R.9, MS64 NGC. Kentucky native John C. Breckinridge was vice president in 1856 (the youngest in American history, inaugurated at age 36), under President Buchanan and ran for president in 1860. This token is from that unsuccessful run for the presidency, after which he became a U.S. senator from Kentucky. Because he supported the rebellious South, he was expelled from the Senate in 1861. He became a Confederate general, and then Secretary of War for the Confederate States of America from January 1862 until April 1865. This token has a current catalog value of $1,000 in MS60. This example is found without the typical hole for wearing a ribbon.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
