1861<50C> Scott Token PR64 NGC. Breen-8003. White metal. J.W. Scott purchased the Confederate half dollar reverse die in 1879 from Ebenezer Locke Mason, Jr., who in turn had acquired it from former New Orleans Mint Chief Coiner Dr. B. F. Taylor. Scott promptly used the die to produce medals for collectors. 500 pieces were struck on 1861-dated half dollars with ground reverses. Another 500 pieces were struck in white metal. The obverse die for the latter issue bore verbose legends that explained the significance of the restrike. This flashy example is well struck and shows glimpses of chestnut toning. The fields display delicately hairlines. Listed on page 375 of the 2007 Guide Book.
